Sermon for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sermon for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Alcoholics Anonymous and it's 12 steps have been a profound influence upon my thinking about human nature and the Catholic Faith. If I were to paraphrase the central tenants of AA's philosophy, I would say:

  1. Sanity means facing reality as it is without delusion and without resentment.
  2. Human nature is fragile and can collapse on itself with surprisingly little weight.
  3. Human beings need purpose outside of themselves to survive.

These ideas are easily seen throughout the scriptures and in the Letter to the Hebrews from today's readings. That sense of purpose is the hermenutic key to understanding today's Gospel in which our Lord says that He has come not to establish peace, but division and to set the Earth on fire!

This sermon was delivered at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Tallulah, La on Sunday, August 14, 2016.
